SHALLAL DANCE WORKSHOP: THU 09 FEB / 2 - 4
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
’Rise and Fall’ is a new body of installation work, created by Shallal Studios in partnership with Grays Wharf. Artist Janet Holland will use found objects and recycled materials to create large-scale paintings which will become a theatrical set in the space for performers and musicians to respond to. The audience is invited to witness Holland’s rhythmic painting process and observe the dramatically changing landscape around them.
Cornwall based artist and musician Amy Lawrence has created a sound piece inspired by Holland’s working process. Featuring vibrations, the sound piece has been created for Janet, who is deaf, as well as for hearing audiences. During the exhibition, Shallal dancers will be invited to respond to Holland’s paintings and Lawrence’s sound piece during a live performance. The work will be documented by Cornish based film-maker Lou Brett who has been following Janet’s process leading up to the exhibition.
This exhibition showcases Holland’s unique ability to create large scale immersive work, while leaving potential for her to discover new ways of working in a new environment. Holland’s process is incredibly focused and fast, as she confidently uses whole tubs of paint, creating layers that she scrubs and constantly reworks, so that the compositions rapidly change through colour and mark making. This time-based project celebrates her performative working style.
